Authoritarian

The authoritarian style of parenting frequently makes it clear who makes the rules and who gives the punishment and rewards. The expectations are clear and the roles of the family members are also very clear. The parent tells the child what to do, there is little flexibility and the parent controls most of the decision making. This style can be confrontational at times especially with a teen that does not like to be told what to do.

Equalitarian

The equalitarian style of parenting is more democratic so the family makes decisions together for the most part. There is a team spirit atmosphere encouraging to problem-solve, set goals and accomplish tasks together. Teens from these families learn that their opinion counts. This type of parent is sensitive and responsive to their teen’s needs. Discipline is more of an opportunity to teach rahther than punish. This type of parent may conflict with a teen that wants things done for them rather than to own their part in the process.

Permissive

The permissive style of parenting is a more gentle approach and gives a broad boundary to children to problem-solve or make decisions. This parent will make everything seem like it was their teen’s idea. This parent is compassionate and encouraging and understands how to motivate their teen from within the teen by using their desire to improve, their desire to reach their goal and even some guilt. This parent encourages freedom of expression and encourage your teen to voice their opinion.  This type of parent may conflict with a teen that needs more structure and motivation by being told what to do.
