11 Teen Parenting Dos and Don’ts
1. Do ask your teen how their days went
Don’t take “fine” for an answer
2. Do give your teen lots of hugs and verbal affirmation of your love
Don’t let their shrug or mumbling make you think they don’t like you doing this
3. Do know that your teen may experiment with drugs and alcohol during their high school career
Don’t think that you should be the person they experiment with or have make the purchase
4. Do present yourself as approachable to your teen
Don’t forget that you are still the parent and a disciplinarian first. They have other teens as friends.
5. Do let your teen know that you have a sense of humor
Don’t let your teen think they’ll get away with stuff because you’re willing to joke around with them.
6. Do give your teen privacy.
Don’t be afraid to take it away when they are irresponsible with it.
7. Do let your teen socialize with friends
Don’t judge those friends before you take the time to get to know them.
8. Do let your teen date
Don’t let your teen’s partner get away with having no relationship with you too.
9. Do let your teen make mistakes
Don’t clean up the mistake and have them miss the opportunity to learn a life lesson
10. Do listen to your teen when they are talking
Don’t let your desire for who you want them to be cloud what you are hearing about who they are.
11. Do tell your teen in no uncertain terms that you love them dearly
Don’t forget that they love you too and they may not know how much until they have their own teen.
Being a parent is a long term investment, but the return is better than the stock market if you are invested and patient.
