Dia De Los Muertos
This weekend will be the celebration of Dia De Los Muertos or Day of the Dead. This is a Mexican holiday that celebrates loved ones who have died.
Mexican culture uses this holiday to honor their loved ones in a series of days that begin with day 1 honoring babies and children and day 2 honoring adults who have died.
The celebration includes fond discussions of loved ones, celebrations at the grave site, in the neighborhood, and in the home that include a lot of decoratoins, art and food. There is special bread and the meals consist of the loved one’s favorite dishes. There are beautiful images of skulls and skeletons used to embellish the streets as well as offerings of artfully prepared candies and food.
Dia De Los Muertos is a great opportunity to take a page from the Mexican culture and have a discussion with your teen about loved ones in their family who have died. These old family and friends have contributed in some way to the legacy of who your teen is. Discussing them with your teen is another way to give them insight into what they are made of and of what they are capable.
Stories about courage and weakness, sadness and joy, obstacles and triumph enable your teen to discover heroes in their own family.
