Encouraging Your Teen To Think Positively
When given a choice to think positively or negatively, it can take an extra thought to consider the positive. It isn’t a Pollyanna thing; it’s just that it doesn’t take much more energy. The result is the same, it just means the time spent deliberating before the result is given is either spent depressed or reasonably happy. Happy begets happy so why not be happy?
There are things your teen can’t change. Now this doesn’t mean they shouldn’t invest the energy before hand to bend things their way. This is what being prepared is all about. So H.W. is about preparing for the quiz or test and track practice is about preparing for the meet. However, once the prep time is over and your teen has been asked to perform on that test or at that track meet, there’s the waiting and waiting and more waiting. This can do a number on the best of us. Waiting for a test result, an acceptance letter, or an offer letter from a desired job can be very stressful, but how much more pleasant the wait if it’s spent enjoying one’s self knowing they have done all they can do and it was their best. Now they can enjoy life while hoping for the best.
Focusing on the big goal rather than the obstacles that could prevent reaching that goal is what makes dreams come true. After the hard work, their eyes on the prize will allow your teen to think positively while they wait. After all complaining to everyone around them about why they’re sure it went badly isn’t going to make others believe in them or make anyone want to be around them. So get your teen to think positively, they have nothing to lose!
