In Memoriam, 9-11-01

Today will mark the eight year anniversary of the 9-11-01 tragedy. Although the events occurred long ago, for those who lost their parents when they were children and are now teens, the moment may seem like yesterday.

Anniversaries are important because they allow the living to honor the dead. When people do not seem to remember, it is as though the person never lived. Keeping the memory of the dead alive in some way keeps the loved one near.

Because anniversaries can cause a wide range of emotions, it is important that for those connected with the now teens who had parents who died in the 9-11 tragedy to be prepared for any type of behavior. They may be angry, sad, stoic, but whatever they choose know that they will need someone to listen, be patient and possibly give a hug.

On this day, we honor and keep the memory alive of all the people who lost their lives because their legacy lives through those who loved them. When we love and reach out to these teens, we help validate what these teens already know, their parent’s lives mattered and so do they.
