My Teen Is REALLY Focused

There are some teens that are simply struggling to figure out what they’re going to do with their lives. They stand like a person at a bus stop waiting to learn what their passion is. And there are some teens that just know. They have known all their lives. They have it all planned out right down to when their 2nd kid is gonna be born. There is no peripheral vision, they know what they want.

Some people are just planners. They want the plan and they need to know the plan. Congratulations! You have a focused teen and so you never argue about what your teen is gonna do with their life. Yeah! But then your teen tells you, “Why do I have to learn to type? I’m not gonna be a secretary?” You offer another experience, “Hey there’s this great immersion course in Italy. Would you like to learn Italian?” And you hear, “Why do I need to learn Italian, I’m going to medical school and then residency and then fellowship. I don’t need Italian Mom.” This is when you start to worry. Who wouldn’t want to learn Italian in Italy? Especially with all that great pasta!

This is when you sit your teen down and have the talk you thought you wouldn’t need to have about being too focused on a goal. It is so important that your teen still take in great experiences. Heck, it’s important they take in bad experiences. These opportunities help shape who they are becoming and allow them to develop their emotional intelligence as well as their intellectual intelligence. It helps round them out and who knows it may inspire them to become the great Italian chef they didn’t know they were supposed to become!

Life is daring, so take chances Prince once said when accepting an academy award. Remind your teen not to be so focused on their goals that they forget to experience as much of what life has to offer and not just the part they think they’re supposed to accomplish.
