Parent-Teen Ice Breaker Games

You can try these games with your family, another family or a group of teens.  Games are a fun way to connect with your teen and help ease the tension associated with the dreaded cornering them in their room to have an “important” talk.

1. Movies

Recite mono or dialogues from movies and guess the character or the movie. You can use movies from an era, movies seen together or select movies by theme (e.g. food as a character…Like Water for Chocolate, Chocolate, etc).

2. Music

Write incomplete music lyrics and pick from three answers that complete the lyric. (e.g. if you used Purple haze by Jimi Hendrix, you could ask, excuse me: A. while I kiss this guy B. While I kiss the sky or C. while I was high). This is a great way to learn the words to your teen’s songs. This could lead to a discussion of lyrics be they sentimental, timeless or vulgar.

3. Happy Moment

Describe a happy moment or proud moment (e.g. I stuck up for a kid who was being bullied at school, I prevented a co-worker from losing their job). This is a great opportunity to learn your values and appreciate the big and small moments of our lives.

4. A Bad Day

Describe a bad day. You can either vote who had the worst bad day and give that person a treat or use it as an opportunity to learn how relative a bad day is, because even a bad day can have an upside.  This can help teach empathy and compassion for others.

5. My Bag

Each person has a bag with 5 things that represent something about them (five favorite things or write five things I hope to have accomplished 10 years from now on paper). Talk about the items in the bag and why they are important.  Ask questions to keep the conversation going and learn more intimate thoughts and details about each other.

Interactive games like these are great ways to connect in a relaxed atmosphere while learning about yourself and your teen!
