Your Teen’s Mind On The Money
Someone comes to your teen and says they can give them everything they want. Everything. You need only give up any current and future close friendships.
It sounds simple. Fame, fortune and oh yes the money. Ask a teen what they want to do with their lives and sometimes, not all the time, they say , “Something where I make a lot of money.”
Well being Kanye, or Brittney for a day has its down side. When you hear their lyrics on the price of fame, it can sound like the whinings of a rock star, but upon closer examination you get a glimpse into the price of not knowing who is a real friend. Some might say that the cost of not having someone who knows you intimately that you trust and who loves you unconditionally is very high, maybe too high. Here are the lyrics to Kanye’s Pinoccio’s Story from his recent 808s & Heartbreak CD.
There are no clothes that I can buy
That could turn back the time
There is no vacation spot I could fly
That could bring back a piece of real life
Real life what does it feel like?
And Brittany Spears’ lyrics in Mannequin found on her Circus CD expressed it this way
You told me you’re lonely
Can’t hear you, Can’t feel you.
I’m frozen in a pose and there’s no way to move me
Watch me, dress me, can’t impress me
I’m not changing, I’m just… :
The money does not make you happy. Ask any successful person and they can tell you this, but this is not what the teenzine splatters on their cover and frankly no one would believe them. These talented musicians are testament to that. Their lives have been fodder for tabloids and the sales have demonstrated our gluttony for human tragedy despite the high cost to these individuals.
So the next time your teen says something like I want to do something where I “make a lot of money,” ask them if they have a good friend and pose to them, if they knew that the money would take the friendship away, would they still want all the money? Could they risk walking through life with the uncertainty of who to trust and be okay? Could they live with a sense of loneliness that can come from not being able to make a genuine connection with someone and trust it?
Obtaining fortune and fame, that struggle ultimately costs millions of dollars; having someone who loves you unconditionally and unshakably, priceless. For everything else material, there truly is MasterCard.
