Your Teen’s Year in Review

What a year! So much has been accomplished. Your teen may be thinking of their chances of hanging out with friends, or wonder who their going to kiss to bring in the new year, but as a teen parent you have an opportunity to get your teen to think about their goals for next year.

A sign that a new year is coming is the year in review specials that pop up all over the place, MTV, ESPN, CSPAN, etc. They take the best and the worst and consolidate them into one high paced 2-hour special.  You can use this same concept of review for your teen providing some perspective on last year’s moments and hope for the up and coming new year.

Using digital movies, photos, pen to paper, spoken word or song, compile the moments that were special in their triumph as well as their disappointment. The moments of triumph serve to remind them of how capable they are, which they forget when things are difficult.  The worst moments put on display those times of resilience when your teen overcame the most challenging situations. If you ask your teen about these moments they will undersell them, it is up to you to praise them so your teen tries harder next time they are faced with a challenge.

You can help bring these moments to life by adding comments by way of narration or writing something. This kind of gentle reminder, “Wow, look how far you’ve come. I remember when you were thinking you wouldn’t be able to show your face in school again you were so embarrassed. Look at you now!”

Your teen should be as proud of their past accomplishments as you are. Inspire them to top what they have done by encouraging them to do even better next year. Show them their year in review.
