Is your teen planning on losing weight this year? Have they done the most important first step in weight loss? It is so important that if they don’t take this step they are sure to gain the weight back.

The first step in weight loss is for your teen  to accept themselves as a great person who can achieve anything they want even if they don’t lose weight.

Often times what motivates people to lose weight is a fantasy that when they lose weight, they will get that date, grade, career, friends, etc. will all come to fruition. The truth is that unless they love themselves the way they are now, they are happy with themselves now, believe they can accomplish anything they want now, they will not be happy when they lose the weight, how much more be able to  keep the weight off.

This is a lesson that is worth stressing to your teen before they endeavor to lose weight. They can sometimes be motivated by things like you nagging them, the doctor mentioning it at a physical, or a looming dance, prom or wedding. These stresses can convince them to do something they are not ready for.

Invariably when your teen loses some weight and no one notices they are going to be deeply hurt.  Anyone who has ever had a lot of weight to lose knows that although your teen can see and feel changes, others may not notice until the results are more dramatic. However, it is others not noticing the first few pounds that can discourage some from going further.  When your teen has taken the first step in weight loss, this is not such a disappointment and they just go on.

Weight loss is too difficult a task to be motivated solely by outside forces. The first step in weight loss is for your teen to recognize they are as beautiful, smart and successful as they are going to be whether they lose weight or not.
