You Can Be Anything You Want
You can do anything you set your mind to. Anything at all. You simply need to put your mind to it. See, look how great you’re doing. I knew you could do it. You’re thinking about your future? Really, what do you think you want to do with your life? I’m sure it’s going to be great. Doctor? Lawyer? Dentist? Okay, I’m dying of anticipation. What do you think you want to be when you finish school? Well Dad. I want to be an actor.
Wow! You pump your teen up and get them all excited about their future. You open the world to them and let them consider all of the possibilities; and then they choose something from way in left field that blindsides you. Something you didn’t really consider as an option. Something you would not have chosen for them.
Your disappointment is going to confuse your teen tremendously. You said they could be anything they wanted. They know that what is going to come out of their mouth is not going to be met with excitement, but they were hoping that since you did say,” anything” that it would be okay eventually, but right now your reaction communicates a great deal of disappointment and this will make them screen what they tell you and limit their sharing the journey to whatever it is the ultimately do with their lives with you.
So, it is important to tell your teen they can do and be anything they want, but it is also important to remember that your teen is a separate body from you. Teens don’t read minds and they don’t live your unfulfilled dreams so when they consider all of the things they can do with their lives they consider it from the standpoint of their dreams. This is really how it should be.
